George CRUST and Elizabeth CRUST
George CRUST (1833-1913), son of Robert CRUST and Rebecca BIRCHBY, was born on 17 November 1833 in Wainfleet, Lincolnshire, England. He was baptised on 15 December 1833 at All Saints Church, Wainfleet.
Elizabeth CRUST (1832-1882), daughter of James CRUST and Mary Ann ROCKLIFF, was born on 28 November 1832 in Boston, Lincolnshire and was baptised on 12 February 1833 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Red Lion Street, Boston.
In 1841, George, aged 8 was living with his mother Rebecca, step-father Obediah Clayton, brother James and half-brother Obediah in the Village, South Witham, Grantham, Lincolnshire. Elizabeth, aged 9, was living in Leake, Boston, Lincolnshire with her parents and siblings.
By 1851, George, aged 17, and his family had moved to London and were living at 2 William Street, Bermondsey, Southwark. George, his brother James and his step-father, Obediah were working as Tanners. Elizabeth, aged 18, was living with her mother, Mary Ann, a Cottager with 20 acres and brother Samuel at the Manor House, Leake, Lincolnshire.
George and Elizabeth, who were first cousins once removed, married on 19 August 1859 in the Registry Office, Hartlepool, Durham, England. Witnesses to their marriage were Robert Crust, Elizabeth's younger brother and Grace Tindall, her niece.

At the time of their marriage, they were living in Scarborough Street, West Hartlepool, Durham, England.
In 1861, George aged 27 and Elizabeth aged 27, along with their baby son, George Robert 7 months old, had moved a few doors away to 9 Williams Terrace, Bermondsey, and George was working as a Tanner.
The following year on 25 July 1862 George, Elizabeth and son George Robert left from London on the ship Sultana arriving in Moreton Bay, Queensland via Plymouth on 1 Nov 1862. Sadly, two year old George Robert, died on the voyage to Australia of Infantile Fever. The journey cost them £9. When they arrived in Brisbane they received a land order valued at £36. For an account of the voyage of the Sultana see the Diary of John Harrop, a second class cabin passenger. Elizabeth gave birth to their second child, Samuel, 22 days after arriving in Brisbane. Five months earlier, on 7 June 1862 Elizabeth's younger brother Robert CRUST arrived in Moreton Bay aboard the ship Whirlwind.
I received a copy of this original passenger ticket from Edna Gorton in 1985. It had been passed down through the family from George Crust to his daughter, Selina, to her son Walter Philip Pedwell who passed it on to his daughter Edna.
On 31 October 1863, George, was mentioned in the The North Australian, Brisbane and The Courier, Brisbane newspapers for "Obstructing the Footpath - George Crust pleaded guilty to having ridden upon the footpath. He was fined 5s and 3s.6d. costs".
In 1874 George and the family were residents at the Ekibin Tannery, Ipswich Road, Brisbane, Qld. He worked there as a Journeyman Tanner.
The family then suffered a series of tragic events. In 1881, their youngest son, George Albert, aged 9, was kicked in the head by a horse. He suffered brain damage to the extent that his body grew but he had the intelligence of a child and the imprint of the hoof remained with him until he died in 1941. The following year, on 5 May 1882 in Woolloongabba, Brisbane, Elizabeth died, aged 49, of Phthisis Pulmonalis commonly known as Consumption of Lungs. She had suffered this disease for 3 years. She was buried the following day in the South Brisbane Cemetery. On the day of her funeral, their 18 year old daughter Rebecca Caroline died in the Brisbane Hospital, of Typhoid Fever after an illness lasting three weeks.
Seven years later on 2 February 1889, daughter Priscilla was admitted as a patient to the Goodna Mental Asylum, Goodna, Qld, where she lived for 30 years until her death on 24 December 1919. Records held by the Queensland State Archives do not reveal the reason for her committal. Following are letters regarding payment for her care:
On 13 July 1899, George was mentioned in The Brisbane Courier, page 3, "A Recent Accident. Action against the Tramways Company" where George sued the Brisbane Tramways Company to recover £50 damages for injuries received when a tramcar collided with the bus he was travelling on, throwing him violently to the ground. George lost the case however he was not required to pay costs because it was decided he had suffered enough.
George, lived the last four years of his life with his daughter Selina and her husband George Albert PEDWELL, also living with them was Selina's brother, George Alfred CRUST who was mentally impaired.
George CRUST died, aged 80, of Senectus, Cardiac Failure on 19 October 1913 in Samford, Qld. He was buried two days later in Samford Cemetery, Methodist Section, Samford. His death was reported on 1 November 1913 in The Queenslander, Brisbane, Qld - p.12 "DEATHS : CRUST - At Samford, on the 13th October, 1913. George Crust, late of Ekibin, South Brisbane. Aged 80 years.”
