Joseph BOWMAN and Sarah HAND
Joseph BOWMAN (c.1829-1872), son of George William BOWMAN and Mary PAGETT, was born about 1829. For most of his life he worked in the iron industry but later became a Grocer.
Sarah HAND (1835-1931), daughter of Francis HAND and Esther WEBB, was born on 9 December 1835 in Stourbridge, Worcestershire and was baptised on 14 May 1837 in Old Swinford, Worcestershire.
Joseph and Sarah married on 17 January 1865 in the Parish Church, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire, England.
On 6 June 1841, Joseph aged 11 was living with his parents in Brierley Hill, Kingswinford, Stourbridge, Staffordshire. Sarah aged 5 was living with her parents in Rye Market, Old Swinford, Stourbridge.
On 31 March 1851, Joseph aged 18 was living with his mother, a widow, and his siblings in 15 High Street, Kingswinford, Stourbridge Union. He was working as an Iron Roller. Sarah aged 16 was still living in Rye Market, Stourbridge Union, Worcestershire with her parents and brothers and sisters.
On 8 April 1861, Joseph aged 30 was living in High Street, Kingswinford, Stourbridge with his mother and two of his brothers. All the boys were working in the iron industry, with Joseph being a Mill Man. Sarah aged 26 was living in The Green, Kingswinford, Stourbridge with another family and working as an Assistant in their Grocer's Shop.
On 3 April 1871, Joseph aged 39 and Sarah aged 37 are married and living in a Grocer's Shop, 24 Moor Street, Kingswinford, Brierley Hill, Stourbridge. Joseph was a Shopkeeper. Living with them was their son Joseph aged 2. Their older daughter Emily (my great grandmother) was living with her grand-parents Francis and Esther HAND.
Joseph died aged 40 of Phthisis (better known as tuberculosis) on 5 February 1872 in Moor Street, Brierley Hill. He was a Master Grocer. The informant was Sarah's brother-in-law Isaac Hunt.

In 1894, aged 23 she joined her family in Australia, travelling aboard the ship "Ophir" which arrived in Sydney on 5 November 1894. On the 18 January 1905 she married Sam SOUTHWELL in Queensland. They had no children and Kate died aged 73 on 23 November 1944 in Queensland.

Sarah HAND and Samuel HAMMOND (her second husband)
After the death of her first husband, Sarah, aged 40, married Samuel HAMMOND on 6 March 1876 in Netherton, Worcestershire, England. Samuel, aged 25, was born about 1851 in Wordsley, Staffordshire. He was about 15 years younger than Sarah and was an Engineer.
On 4 April 1881, Sarah, aged 43 and Samuel, aged 29 were living in Cat Inn, Wordsley Green, Kingswinford, Staffordshire, Stourbridge. Samuel was working as an Engine Fitter & Licensed Victualler. Living with them were their three children, Mary aged 4, Samuel aged 2, and baby Ethel as well as Sarah's daughters, Emily aged 13 and Kate aged 10.
In 1883 all the family, except for 12 year old daughter Kate, emigrated to Australia, arriving in Brisbane on 7 March 1883. They travelled on the Australian Royal Mail Steamer, "Chyebassa". Kate stayed behind in Brierley Hill with her Aunt, Mary Masters Hunt and cousins. Emily was also supposed to stay in England with Kate but according to family stories when waving goodbye to her family she ran up the gangplank and refused to leave the ship. Kate joined her family in Australia eleven years later.

In 1905 Sarah and Samuel were living in Merton St, South Brisbane. Sarah was doing domestic duties and Samuel was an engineer.
In 1908 and 1913 they were living in Vulture St, West End, Sth Brisbane. Sarah was a fruiterer and Samuel was an engineer.
Samuel died, aged 61, on 28 April 1913 in Brisbane and was buried in the South Brisbane Cemetery, Brisbane. Funeral Notice for Samuel Hammond
Sarah lived a long life and died of a fracture of the neck of her left femur, senility and syncope (a fainting fit) on 24 June 1931 in Brisbane Hospital. She was 95 years old. Mary was born on 12 December 1876 in Wordsley, Staffordshire. She married Richard John BOXALL (1862-1952) on 7 June 1897 in Christ Church, Childers, Queensland. They had 11 children:
2. Samuel Oscar HAMMOND (1878-1955).
Samuel was baptised on 3 April 1878 in St. Mary, Kingswinford, Staffordshire, England. He married Henrietta Ruth PRATT on 9 January 1907 in Brisbane, Queensland. He was a Fruiterer. Samuel died aged 77 on 18 January 1955 in Queensland.
They had 3 children:
3. Ethel HAMMOND (1880-1964).
Ethel was born in 1880 in Stourbridge. She married William James McCallum WILSON on 12 February 1914 in Queensland. They had one child, Ruth Wilson (1915-) who married Jack Lord.
